Our Story

Founded in 2014 by handlers, veterans, and volunteers who refused to let working dogs end their lives anywhere but home.

How K9VA Began

K9 Veterans Association was founded in the spring of 2014 by a small group of former handlers, a retired sergeant from the U.S. Army's 528th Military Working Dog Detachment, and two civilian volunteers who'd grown up around working dogs. The spark was simple and painful: a Belgian Malinois named Atlas โ€” a four-tour explosives detection dog โ€” had been quietly retired and was facing a future no working dog should face.

Within six weeks, Atlas had a permanent home, a vet on standby, and a fenced acre of grass. Within six months, four more dogs followed. By the end of that first year, we had a name, a 501(c)(3) determination letter, and the beginning of a promise: no retired military or police K9 left behind.

A Promise, Then a Sanctuary

For the first two years we operated out of a borrowed barn in Columbia County, NY. Dogs slept on donated cots; volunteers brought meals from home. In 2016 we secured the 38-acre property in Hudson Valley that would become our flagship sanctuary โ€” chosen specifically for its quiet road frontage, ample shade, and proximity to a veterinary teaching hospital.

What Drives Us

These dogs walked point on combat patrols. They cleared rooms in places we'll never read about. They rode in cruisers, sniffed out narcotics, found missing children, and stood between officers and harm. When their working life ends, they deserve more than a kennel and a phone call. They deserve a couch, a yard, and someone who knows their name.

"A working dog gives you everything. The least we can do is give them the rest of it back."
โ€” Sgt. (Ret.) Marcus Hale, K9VA co-founder

How We're Different

K9VA doesn't broker adoptions or operate as a way-station. Every dog who comes through our gates is guaranteed care for life โ€” whether that's six weeks or six years. Dogs we can't responsibly place stay with us permanently. The Hudson Valley sanctuary is their home.

  • Lifetime guarantee. No dog is ever returned to a shelter or rehomed under stress.
  • Trauma-informed care. Most of our K9s arrive with PTSD-equivalent behavioral profiles. Our team is trained accordingly.
  • Handler-first matching. When placement is possible, we prioritize former handlers and the families they trust.
  • Transparent finances. Independently audited every year. Our annual report is public.
